Linux General Information

There are numerous choices of distributions and desktop environments.

The oldest binary distributions still under development (binary: meaning you don't need to compile from source to have a functional system):

  • Debian
  • Slackware
  • Red Hat

More recent, since 2006:

  • Archlinux

Most other distributions are derivatives of those described above.
Distrowatch to explore the many distributions available (in English).
Distrosea to test Linux distributions online. (Distributions are launched in Qemu)
